From food trucks to South by Southwest, Austin has everything you could ever dream of having a conversation about. But when the topic of Austin inevitably comes up, will you be ready with specifics to justify to your friends that you’re ready to make the millennial pilgrimage? Take our advice and learn how to get people to think you’re cool for wanting to move to Austin someday.
1. Mention how it’s not like the rest of Texas
Nobody wants to sounds like a backwards Texan, so make sure to emphasize that you love how different Austin is. This will publically affirm your progressive ideals while making it sound like you know stuff about the city.
2. Tell people how cool SXSW is
It doesn’t matter that you’ve never actually been to South by Southwest because simply mentioning this popular film, music, and technology festival will be enough to prove you know it’s in Austin.
3. Mention that you’ve got an old friend living in Austin now
Telling everybody you’ve got an old friend who loves living in Austin instantly builds credibility that you know what you’re talking about. Don’t worry that you’ve never actually visited that friend – we know you really want to someday and you’ve both just been super busy – so it’s fine.
4. Cite a trendy bar to show you’re in-the-know about the nightlife
Really any bar will do, but our favorite is Juanito’s. To save the environment, an origami artist made this incredible place out of recycled paper. But because liquid makes the bar soggy, Juanito’s doesn’t actually serve booze! The only thing we love more than the quirky surprise of being served an empty glass without the burden of having to drink it, is talking about how cool it was.
5. Talking about some sweet concert venues proves you’ve got the music scene covered too
Toss in a reference to something like the Moody Theater. This concert hall isn’t just any venue: it originated as a church, then was converted into a Kinko’s, and now it’s a barbershop-no wait, a rock-climbing wall? We’re not exactly sure, but it doesn’t matter as long as you sound enthusiastic when you talk about it.
6. Talk about the great food truck scene
Everybody knows the only thing better than good food is good food that some guy hands you out of the window of his van. If anybody asks what your favorite truck in Austin is, just say it was some kind of delicious fusion taco thing.
